Introduction

Venice, a city celebrated for its historical grandeur and architectural marvels, now faces the challenge of balancing beauty with sustainability. The delicate harmony of its canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture is threatened by environmental degradation and overtourism. Yet, amidst these challenges, an opportunity arises on Tronchetto – a chance to transform it into a vibrant ‘Communal Backyard’, where nature is not just an asset but a right. Tronchetto is part of the city of Venice, primary acting as a transportation hub for residents and visitors. This proposal arose from research and discussion during a two-work summer school on Sustainable, Healthy Cities in Venice during June 2024, hosted by the European Cultural Academy, the GCHU, and the King’s Foundation. It outlines a comprehensive redevelopment plan to create an ecological haven that harmonises Venetian heritage with pioneering sustainability, positioning Tronchetto as a beacon of urban renewal and ecological harmony.

Vision Statement

Imagine an oasis where every pathway and building is integrated into a living ecosystem, designed for, and with the community’s health and wellbeing in mind. Tronchetto would be transformed into a dynamic urban forest that breathes life into Venice, becoming a model for cities worldwide (Figure 1). This transformation will not only rejuvenate the island, but also enhance the city’s environmental resilience, and cultural richness.

Project Components

  1. Multi-Use Recreational Spaces: From serene parks to sports complexes and water-based recreational facilities, these spaces offer residents and tourists alike a playground for the body and soul.
  2. Urban Agriculture & Floating Gardens: Local food production empowers community self-sufficiency while purifying the air and water, creating a sustainable cycle of consumption and renewal. Example: Floating Gardens in Vejle, Denmark
  3. Cultural Preservation & Enhancement: A dedicated artisan village showcasing Venice’s rich crafts alongside contemporary art galleries and performance spaces that celebrate local and global cultures.
  4. Innovative Residential Designs: Eco-friendly modular housing equipped with green roofs and living walls, ensuring affordable, sustainable living.
  5. Educational & Interactive Centres: Facilities designed to engage and educate on sustainable practices, Venetian ecology, and the importance of cultural preservation.

Wider Relevance for Sustainable Urbanism

The approach taken with Tronchetto offers a blueprint for other cities facing similar challenges. By demonstrating how historical and cultural richness can coexist with modern sustainability, the project aims to inspire global urban development strategies. The concepts of urban agriculture, eco-friendly housing, and multi-use recreational spaces can be adapted and applied to urban areas worldwide, promoting health, community, and environmental stewardship.

Methodology

  1. Phase 1: Conduct comprehensive research into Tronchetto’s current urban fabric and environmental challenges, alongside identifying potential areas for sustainable development.
  2. Phase 2: Implement field surveys and community workshops to gather insights and foster local participation in the project’s planning process. This phase will also include detailed architectural and environmental assessments.
  3. Phase 3: Develop and curate content for public exhibitions and an interactive digital platform that chronicles the project’s progress and educates on sustainable urban practices.

Experience and Engagement

A dynamic, participatory experience where the local community actively engages in shaping their environment. Through integrated green spaces, cultural hubs, and educational facilities, the project aims to shift perceptions towards sustainability and foster a collaborative spirit among stakeholders.

Collaboration and Community Involvement

Working in conjunction with local artisans, architects, and urban developers, this project will integrate diverse viewpoints. Engagements with local residents and businesses will ensure that the redevelopment meets their needs and enriches their quality of life. Workshops and public forums will serve as the backbone of community engagement, making the project a hands-on educational tool. Interactive digital models of proposed changes will allow community members to visualize renovations and provide feedback in real time.

Why This Project Matters

Cultural and Economic Revitalisation:

This project will not only preserve but also enhance Venice’s unique cultural heritage, fostering a sense of pride and identity among its residents. By attracting tourists interested in sustainable and cultural tourism, Venice can diversify its economic base, reducing over-reliance on traditional tourism and spreading economic benefits more evenly.

Environmental Leadership:

Establishing Tronchetto as a green sanctuary will set a new standard for ecological urban living. The island will serve as the ‘lungs of Venice’, improving air quality, reducing urban heat island effects, and providing habitats for local flora and fauna. This initiative aligns with global sustainability goals and demonstrates Venice’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Community Wellbeing:

Directly impacting the health and happiness of thousands, this project aims to create a living legacy of global importance. By providing green spaces, recreational facilities, and cultural hubs, Tronchetto will become a centre for community engagement and social cohesion. The emphasis on sustainable living and local food production will promote healthier lifestyles and foster a sense of community ownership and pride. Engaging residents in the planning and development process ensures that the project meets their needs and aspirations, creating a vibrant, inclusive community.
